What is Aggressive Dog Behavior?
Jumping and Barking Dogs = Aggressive Dogs …who knew?
December 25th, 2009
Help! My dog’s doing exactly what I’ve let her do for years!
It was crunch time. My Rottweilers‘ aggressive behavior was beginning to affect my love life. Monica was getting fed up with Shelly jumping all over and having exhausted my limited supply of Canine Training techniques, I did what any man in my situation would do, I turned to the internet. I tried searching out the Dog Whisperer but Cesar wasn’t really my style. Besides, it looked like I was going to have to buy a lot of stuff from him, too (just to get started). Thank’s Cesar Millan, but no thanks. Then I came across one of the silliest terms I’ve ever heard of in my life, a dog behaviourist.
My first thought was:
“What the heck is a dog behaviourist?”
My second thought was:
“That sounds like exactly what I need.”
I needed to correct my dog’s aggressive behaviors as soon as possible. I needed someone to spell out exactly what steps I needed to take to get Shelly to stop jumping on everyone she meets, especially the kids.
Dog Behaviourists do exist and they really can fix aggressive dogs!
Turns out there really are dog behaviourists and that was exactly what I needed to fix my Rottweilers out of control jumping problem. If you are anything like me, you love your dog; fleas, slobber and all. You probably love her even if she has some bad behaviors, like jumping up because she is so excited to see you or barking at just about everything that moves because she is looking out for your safety and your stuff.
I can’t really put a positive spin on her other bad behaviors, like chewing up my work gloves (and occasionally the side of the house) or bolting out the gate and temporarily forgetting her name for a half hour, but I still love my dog and I really do want the best for her. I just wished there was an easy way to get her to be a ‘good dog’.
What Can I Do About Aggressive Dog Behavior?
December 23rd, 2009 My dog Shelly is a nine year old, 90 lb Rottweiler who continues to display aggressive dog behavior but I still love my puppy dearly. She has been with me since she was just a whining pup and my Rotten Rottie will be with me till the end. While it has been a rewarding and definitely wonderful nine year journey, I believe both of our aggressive Dog Behaviors would have benefited enormously from a Dog Behaviorist.
Born 2B Bad
Why Does My Dog Behave So Bad?
We made it through the puppy breath months and her needle sharp puppy teeth poking into everything, including me. Her constant yapping and whining were just barely tolerable at bedtime and while I’m no dog behaviorist, I knew she just behaved that way to get attention. So, along with a lot of snarling and growling of my own, I did the best I could. There were days though, that my tiny K-9 got negative attention for all of her efforts. I’m not too proud of those days.
I Didn’t Want to Treat my Dog Bad
I didn’t want to be mean to my dog and I never wanted my Shelly-bean to ever be afraid of me but, as a single guy with no clue How To Train A Dog correctly, this is exactly what was starting to happen. I was yelling (barking) at her more than I was Training My Dog and it was starting to show in how she reacted to my commands. I didn’t realize it then but looking back it was plain to see that I was actually teaching her more aggressive dog behaviors and then punishing my puppy for being a good student.
Housebreaking
Somehow I figured out how to get her to go potty outside and aside from the occasional accident every now and again, housebreaking her was a pretty painless process. I was very consistent when it came to letting her out every few hours. This was about the only bit of canine training I got right.
I Was Not a Very Good Dog Trainer
I wish I had known how easy it was going to be to curb my dogs’ bad behavior with Secrets to Dog Training back then, but I didn’t (I don’t even think Dan had come up with it yet). So instead I bought a book on dog training written by a ‘Professional Dog Trainer‘ who said he owned some Dog Obedience school and claimed to have trained and ‘groomed the behavior’ of many blue ribbon show dogs.
The book was on sale so I bought it. It was supposed to be about Training Dogs and there were a lot of pictures with dogs on leashes and they looked like they were obeying and heeling, some were sitting and begging and a few were even shaking hands or paws or whatever.
I wasn’t going to ‘show’ my dog anywhere (except inside my fenced in yard to keep the bad guys away). I didn’t own a bird dog or a deer hound, Shelly was a Rottweiler, not a hunting dog and I didn’t need my dog to retrieve anything for me. She was there so I didn’t have to retrieve any of my stuff. A lot of the topics covered in the book didn’t really apply to us, but it sure did want me to buy a lot of special collars and leashes and harnesses and DVD’s and a few other books written by the same guy. It even came with an order form.
I Tried a Few of his Techniques.
I tried a few of his ‘professional Dog Training Techniques‘ while walking Shelly around the neighborhood but apparently my $12 horse lead did not compare to the $40 or $50 retractable leash and collar combo (I could even have her name engraved on it for a nominal fee) that were suggested in the training manual, so not much dog training was accomplished. Besides, that wasn’t the behavior I was having problems with. She wouldn’t stop barking. She was always trying to “get at” other dogs we passed either on leashes or in fenced yards. It got kind of tense a few times. She never came when I called and an open gate was an invitation for her to run, run, run. I think I mentioned somewhere that I weigh in at about 250 so not a whole lot of dog chasing was going on.
Some Breeds Naturally Exhibit Aggressive Dog Behavior (…or do they?)
I was beginning to believe that some breeds are just naturally more aggressive and I happened to be the lucky owner of that particular hard headed dog breed. It was a fantastic relief to find out that that is not the case. All dogs can be trained, and with a little effort and some (quite a bit of) persistence, even old dogs can learn new tricks. Thanks Dan!

About the Author
Hi, my name is Dave and I am just a guy who has a dog, a dog that didn’t listen very well. Shelly is not a bad dog, she just has alot of aggressive dog behavior s that I have let slide for a very long time. I love my puppy and she is a good dog (most of the time) but she gets pretty excited around new people and likes to jump up and say ‘Hi’. This is annoying when any dog does it to say the least and my ‘puppy’ is a 90 lb Rottweiler. That changes everything, especially when there is a new baby in the house. I needed help, and fast! This is a quick run down of how I fixed a problem that I thought would be unfixable.
