Is A Yorkie The Right Breed Of Dog For You And Your Family? by Kathleen Chester
For more than ten years, the Yorkshire Terrier, Yorkie for short, has made it to the top of the Top Ten American Kennel Club Registration List. Yorkies are also second most popular breed of dogs in the United States because they are playful, compact, and have huge personalities. These Small Dogs have a much larger personality and are known for winning over the hearts of just about anyone. However, Yorkies are not a perfect fit for all homes. It is the responsibility of the breeder to ensure that their Yorkies end up in loving homes and are not abandoned. Before selecting a Yorkie as your family pet, get to know them first!
Yorkies are known for their silky, long coats that will often get matted. Their hair never stops growing. If you maintain a Yorkie’s long coat, you will have to brush it on a daily basis. You can also opt to cut it short, as it does not require much attention, but matting can still occur if you do not give the coat regular attention. If you like grooming and brushing dogs, a Yorkie is the perfect fit.
Yorkies, as they are a breed of terriers, are a very active dog. What they lack in size, they make up for in energy. Do not expect a sedate dog with a Yorkie as this is not the case. Yorkies require daily exercise and lots of playtime. And though they are small, they like playing “big dog” activities, like flyball and Frisbee.
Again, while Yorkies may be small in physical size, they have the attitude of a big dog many times. They are very alert animals that will notify their owners of strangers or danger within close proximity. Many homeowners find this to be a nice benefit. However, for individuals living in an apartment, the piercing bark may cause problems with other tenants. This alertness and desire to protect may cause problems with other dogs as well. It can especially be problematic if this small dog with a big attitude actually encounters a large dog. Therefore, do not take a Yorkie off the leash when walking. As soon as they are free they will run quickly to anything that interests them, which may cause them harm.
The big debate between Yorkie breeders is if this breed of dog is good for small children. While some say yes, other breeders do not sell Yorkie Puppies to families with children under the age of 12. If you do get a Yorkie and have small children, it is important (actually, with any dog it is important) to monitor the child’s interactions with the dog.
Because of its small size and adorable attributes, many individuals spoil their Yorkie rather than train their Yorkie. This is problematic as Yorkies are a hard breed to housebreak. Crating is often the preferred measure for Yorkies. Enabling the Yorkie to develop terrible habits as a puppy means it will be a lot harder to train them as they become adult. If done consistently, it is easy to train Yorkies.
