How difficult are Tibetan Mastiffs to train to be friendly, and how difficult are they to maintain 1-10?
Me and my gf have been talking about getting dogs when we get we move out and she wants to get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and I want a Tibetan Mastiff. But I keep reading that they are difficult to train and all this stuff about how they are really difficult pets to keep. I just want to know how difficult on a scale of 1-10 they are as pets… and what one would need to do to have one as a pet and train to be friendly… Thanks in advanced
Tibetan dogs are not the easiest dogs in the world to live with. They are very intelligent and think for themselves, unlike the more domesticated dogs that most people are used to living with. The large Tibetan breeds can pose formidable problems for inexperienced dog owners. They are *not* recommended for first-time owners.
Tibetan Mastiffs can be very “friendly” – with both other dogs and humans – but they are by nature protective. If they decide another dog or human is a threat, it can be very difficult to dissuade them from that notion.
And they can become extremely destructive if they get bored. Is someone home all day to amuse the dog? If not, what provisions could you make to keep the dog sane and your home intact?
What would happen to the dog if you and/or your girlfriend decided you just couldn’t handle the dog? What would happen to the dog if you and your girlfriend broke up? Who would take responsibility for the dog? Believe me, re-homing a Corgi is far easier than re-homing a TM…
Before you seriously think about acquiring a TM, you need to do lots and lots of research. Read all you can on the ‘net (and believe about half of it); talk to owners and breeders; meet TMs who live near you. Then decide whether you’re ready to make a life-long commitment to any Tibetan dog.

Turner & Hooch [VHS] $3.35 Much better than your average cop-and-dog movie (e.g., K-9), Turner and Hooch is really a love story about a control freak (Tom Hanks) who gradually resigns to the messy chaos of a sweet hulk of a pooch named Hooch. The excuse for this relationship is that the dog can identify a murderer and Hanks needs him, but the film is really about such hilarious moments as Hanks bathing Hooch with a long bru… |
